We’ve started a new “Halq’eméylem word of the week” series on our social media accounts. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to continue seeing our new words (and other content exclusive to those platforms) as it’s added.
Here’s the first one, just to get you started!
This week’s word is Xpá:yelhp (Heh-pa-ya-th-p)
Xpá:yelhp is the western red cedar, which we can find in our local environment. It can grow up to 150 feet tall! Local indigenous people use the western red cedar for many things, including medicine, shelter, clothing, baskets, canoes and for cultural prayer! This versatile tree is an important aspect of indigenous life in the Fraser Valley.
